FBA Advisor Accreditation Program

Advising at the intersection of family and business requires unique expertise. Invest in your career through an education program which will assist you in providing expert advice to families in business.

Family Business Association (FBA) has partnered with the University of Adelaide’s Family Business Education and Research Group (FBERG) to bring you a world class education program to ensure that as an FBA Accredited Advisor you are well equipped to assist families in business to harness their opportunities and deal with the challenges they face.

Developed from cutting-edge research and extensive practitioner expertise, this practical, grounded program is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to enhance your practice in advising families in business.

To achieve Accredited Advisor status, you need to complete two courses – Advising Business Families – Part 1 and Part 2.

Program Overview and Facilitators

Advising Business Families - Part 1

It is essential to have a sound understanding of family businesses to be an effective advisor to such firms. This course develops an understanding of the nature, uniqueness and significance of family businesses as well as the distinctive issues faced when advising such organisations. This course also provides the foundations for Advising Business Families – Part 2.

  • Associate Professor Chris Graves is a Chartered Accountant, Co-Founder and Director of the University of Adelaide’s Family Business Education and Research Group [FBERG] and serves on the editorial review boards of the leading interdisciplinary family business research journals Family Business Review and the Journal of Family Business Strategy.

    His research on the behaviour and performance of family enterprises has been recognised with awards from leading international institutions such as the Family Firm Institute and the International Family Enterprise Research Academy.

    Chris has worked with family businesses as an accountant in public practice, and more recently, through his consulting work as a result of completing a clinical Graduate Diploma in Family Therapy and Systemic Practice. Since joining the University of Adelaide in 2007, Chris has pioneered the introduction of family business curriculum into the university’s academic programs. Over 1,000 students have taken his undergraduate family business course. Chris co-designed the education courses which comprise FBAs Advisor Accreditation program.

Advising Business Families - Part 2

Building on the foundation developed in Advising Business Families - Part 1, this course focuses on the additional skills and practices that advisors require in order to be effective in addressing the unique issues business family clients encounter.

  • For over 40 years, Dr Jaffe has been one of the leading architects of the field of family enterprise consulting globally. As both an organisational consultant and clinical psychologist, he helps multi-generational families to develop governance practices that build the capability of next generation leadership and ensure ongoing capability of financial organisations and family offices to serve their family clients.

    For 35 years, Dennis was professor of Organizational Systems and Psychology at Saybrook University in San Francisco, where he is now professor emeritus.

    Dennis most recent publication series has focussed on the topic of “Building a Hundred Year Family Enterprise” which involved interviewing 100 family businesses across the globe which had existed for at least 100 years.

Delivery

Each course is delivered fully online, in 1.5-2hr session blocks, providing you with the flexibility to work around your busy consulting schedule.

Throughout each course you will be challenged to rethink your views on family business advising through the expertise of your facilitators and the sharing of experiences and learnings by your peers.

You will demonstrate your increased knowledge and expertise through practical assessment tasks designed to further develop your skills in applying tools which will add value to your practice.

The final assessment piece at the conclusion of Advising Business Families – Part 2 will consist of a case study analysis. You will have 2 weeks from the end of the course to submit this assessment.

Eligibility

FBA Advisors must successfully complete both Parts 1 and 2 of the "Advising Business Families" program to attain FBA Advisor Accreditation Membership. We also offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for those who meet specific criteria. RPL, either in whole or part, is available through a formal application process and is subject to approval.

Each course will require approximately 3.5 hours per week time commitment which is made up of:

  • 4 fortnightly modules
  • 1 hour online lecture per module fortnight (self-paced)
  • 3 Online Workshops (5 hours total)
  • Discussion board activity
  • 8 readings
