Tell us about your family business.
In 1995, a customer inquired about our ability to powder coat reinforcing steel. This was not part of our Subiaco panel-beating shop's business, but we recognised it as an opportunity to support the growing local construction industry. The unusual request ultimately led to the establishment of Bestbar — Australia’s largest independent steel reinforcing manufacturer.
The success of Bestbar sparked our vision to acquire and develop businesses that complement and strengthen our offerings. This vision was realised by forming the Westview Group, a diversified family business owned and operated by Grant and Brad Johnston. Westview Group delivers steel products and manufacturing solutions that support construction projects across Australia. We have over 750 employees and an annual revenue of $703 million.
Westview Group comprises:
- Bestbar – the largest independent supplier of steel reinforcement products in Australia
- Wire Industries – servicing the East Coast with reinforcing solutions
- Unipod – a manufacturer of expanded polystyrene products
- Bitberry – a digital solutions company that develops manufacturing and logistics platforms
- Alter – set to become Queensland’s first producer of clean, sustainable steel.
The most recent addition to our Group is Alter. This company is set to build a new $750 million steel mill in Pinkenba that will become Queensland’s first producer of clean, sustainable steel. By leveraging the latest global technologies, we will deliver Australia’s lowest-carbon-emission and highest-quality reinforcement steel, creating over 216 local jobs. As demand for low-carbon steel solutions grows, we are leading the way in securing a more sustainable and self-sufficient future for Australian construction.
Like any family business, we’ve faced our challenges. One of the most difficult came from a monopolistic supplier who attempted to block our work on the Northbridge Tunnel – our first major Bestbar project back in 1997. As the banks tightened loan approvals, we came dangerously close to losing everything, but we found a way forward through determination, resourcefulness and the support of our employees and customers.
What advice would you give to other family businesses?
As a family-owned business, we understand that success isn’t just about scale — it’s about staying true to our values and adhering to sound governance principles while continuing to innovate and evolve. As Brad Johnston, Director of Westview Group and a founding member of Bestbar Reinforcements, puts it:
‘Strong corporate governance is the backbone of any successful family business. Ensure clear structures are in place, with a well-defined overarching agreement that every family member adheres to. Keeping governance regimented among family members helps separate business decisions from personal relationships, setting the foundation for long-term success.’
What do you value about FBA?
After Bestbar was honoured with the WA Established Family Business Award, we attended the FBA conference where we had the chance to meet and connect with other family businesses. Hearing their stories—their journeys, challenges, and lessons—made it easy for us to see the value of being part of FBA.
Family businesses are unique. They come with their own mix of strengths and complexities. Being part of a network that understands that and offers support and guidance is incredibly valuable.
