The Auckland Forum Group #2 marked a significant milestone in March, hosting both its first retreat and, notably the first retreat of its kind for a Forum Group in New Zealand. By all accounts, the occasion was a tremendous success.
Members and their partners gathered in the Bay of Islands, where they were warmly hosted by Forum Group member David Gaze and his wife Anne at their beautiful property. Set against a stunning backdrop, the retreat provided a valuable opportunity to step away from the pace of daily life, connect more deeply, and enjoy meaningful conversation in a relaxed setting.

The two-day programme featured a range of engaging speakers and discussions. On the first day, the group was joined by former Mainfreight executive Kevin Drinkwater, who shared insights into one of New Zealand’s most admired companies and the important philanthropic and educational impact of Duffy Books in Homes. Sandra Drinkwater also joined the group, and her reflections on life “outside the business” sparked wider discussion and fresh perspectives, particularly among partners.
Conversations throughout the retreat extended well beyond business, touching on the New Zealand economy, education, and the job market. Forum Group Member - Duane Enemy, Chief Executive, Air Chathams also shared reflections from his recent Pacific Mission alongside Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, politicians, and business leaders, adding a timely and thought-provoking dimension to the discussions.

On the second day, Sarah Petersen, Chair of Far North Holdings, joined the group to speak about the challenges and opportunities facing the region, and about her role at the intersection of business, local government, and central government. Her session prompted strong engagement from members, many of whom have related interests and activities in the Far North.
The weather certainly played its part allowing the group to hold all sessions outdoors where we were joined by Pīwakawaka (New Zealand native Fantail birds) darting in and about the table as if to join the conversation.
The weekend was capped off with a fine lunch a Marsden Winery, with a final thanks to David and Anne for their generous hospitality.
